Onlookers many, good Samaritan only one
A woman died after she was run over by a speeding car in Jatrabari of the capital yesterday morning.
The accident happened when Achhia Begum, 35, and her four-year-old daughter, Nurunnahar, were going to a relative's house in the area from theirs in Dolaipar, said the victim's husband Abul Kashem, a bus driver.
Achhia was taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital where doctors declared her dead around 11:00am.
Police, quoting witnesses, said Nurunnahar kept crying for help after her mother had the accident while crossing a road. Many crucial minutes passed, but none of the several dozen people, who gathered at the scene, took the critically injured woman to a hospital.
While crossing the area, Zahirul Islam, a cook from Gazaria of Munshiganj, saw it. He rushed Achhia to the DMCH. However, it was already too late.
Anisur Rahman, officer-in-charge of Jatrabari Police Station, told this correspondent last night that the reckless car fled immediately after the accident. “We are trying to identify the car owner.”
