5 JMB men held with 9 grenades
Police arrested five militants of Jama'atul Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB) and recovered grenades, firearms, ammunition, and bomb-making materials during raids in Chittagong yesterday evening.
Chittagong Metropolitan Police raided a ground-floor flat of a five-storey building at Khoyaz Nagar around 6:30pm and recovered nine grenades, a pistol, 120 bullets, and bomb-making material, said Additional Deputy Commissioner Babul Akter of the Detective Branch.
The detainees are: JMB Chittagong unit commander Md Javed, 26, its activists Sujan Babu, 28, Md Fuad, 33, Md Mahbub, 37, and Kajal, 40.
Acting on a tip off, a team of the Detective Branch of Chittagong Metropolitan Police (CMP) first detained Mahbub and Kajal in Madarbari area of the port city in the morning.
After gleaning information from them, police in another drive in the city's Oxygen area arrested Fuad and Sujan in the afternoon.
Extracting more information on Javed's whereabouts from the detainees, police raided the Hazi Nur Ahmed Tower at Khoyaz Nagar.
When police knocked, Javed opened the door of the flat and seeing the police he tried to throw a grenade at them, said ADC Babul.
Police recovered the arms and ammo from three rooms of the flat.
A bomb disposal unit of CMP was searching the flat as of filing of this report at 10:00pm yesterday.
Police claimed that Javed is a textile engineer by profession. He rented the flat on October 1.
