8 held over Uttara schoolboy killing

Law enforcers today claimed arrest of eight “teen gang” members of Uttara over the killing of ninth-grader Adnan Kabir in a turf war in January this year.

The arrestees belong to “Disco Boys” and “Big Boss” groups – held from different places of Uttara, said a message from Rapid Action Battalion (Rab).

The detainees are identified as Shahrier Bin Sattar Setu, chief of “Disco Boys” gang, Rayhan Ahammed Setu alias Disco Setu, 22, Md Akhtaruzzaman Choton, 19, leader of “Big Boss” gang, Md Shahinur Rahman, 17, Md Ramzan Mobarak, 17, Md Selim Khan, 23, Md Ibrahim Hossain Sunny, 28, Mizanur Rahman Sumon, 22, and Jahidul Islam Juice, 21.

In primary investigation they admitted their involvement with Adnan killing, Rab said in a press briefing at its media office in Dhaka.

Of them, Jahidul Islam Juice admitted that he directly participated in the killing, Rab said. Juice also admitted that during the killing mission he was wearing a mask, the elite force said.

Adnan Kabir,15, a ninth grader was beaten to death allegedly by some local boys in the city's Uttara on January 6.

He was a member of a local teenage boys' group Nine Star, which was engaged in a rivalry with another local group Disco Boys.

According to locals, over two dozens of “teen gangs” terrorise Uttara alone. These include Disco Boys, Chhoton Group, Nine Star, Power Boys, Big Boss, Dark Shadow, Red Light, Dada Boyz, Dazzling Spirit, DSB, F.C R.TR, 15 Club, Nafiz Don, PL Rakib, Saiko Ridoy, Dare Devil, Gongzilla, HNY and Dark Souls.

The gangs frequently fight with hockey sticks, cricket stumps and sharp knives to show their muscle power, establish supremacy or “draw respect” from elders and juniors in the area. 

Most of the gang members are from higher and upper middle classes of the society. Some of them end up in taking drugs and mugging.
