Dinajpur is famous not only for fine rice but also for litchis. The juicy summer fruits start ripening towards the end of May and early June. Growers, traders, retailers remain busy as the litchi season is rather short. Around 4,100 hectares of land have come under litchi cultivation in Dinajpur this year, while some 30,000 tonnes of litchis were produced, which is 15 percent of the total litchi production in Bangladesh. Farmers said they produced 5 percent more than that of last year. However, they lament that they did not get good price. A bunch of 100 pieces of Bedana litchi, which was sold between Tk 700 and Tk 1,000 last year, is being sold only at Tk 400 to Tk 600 this year. Famous varieties of Dinajpur litchis include Bombai, Madrasi and China-3. Photo: Anisur Rahman
