Youth injured in police firing
A youth suffered severe bullet injuries in police firing at Bhoirompur village in Pirojpur sadar upazila yesterday.
Police claimed that Shahidul Islam Sheikh, a resident of the village, was injured when they had a "gunfight with a gang of robbers".
Villagers, however, said Shahidul went to a nearby shop to buy tea and sugar in the morning when he saw police and ran in panic; police then shot at him.
He is a fruit seller in Dhaka, and he came home a few days ago, said his brother Rashedul Sheikh. With at least four rubber pellets lodged in his belly, he was hospitalised in Khulna city.
Md Abdur Razzak Mollah, officer-in-charge of Pirojpur Sadar Police Station, said they were at the village to arrest some robbers. "As the robbers opened fire on the cops, they responded,” he said, adding that Shahidul was found injured at the scene after the "gunfight".
