DoJ agrees to probe

  • Trump attacks ex-CIA chief over 'political hit job'

  • First woman CIA director sworn in

The Justice Department has agreed to investigate "any irregularities" in FBI tactics related to President Donald Trump's 2016 campaign after Trump questioned whether an FBI informant had been planted into his political organization.

Trump suggested on Friday that the FBI might have planted or recruited an informant in his presidential campaign for political purposes, citing unidentified reports that at least one FBI representative was "implanted."

The agreement came during a meeting that Trump had with Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein and Federal Bureau of Investigation Director Christopher Wray, White House spokeswoman Sarah Sanders said.

The Justice Department "has asked the inspector general to expand its current investigation to include any irregularities with the Federal Bureau of Investigation's or the Department of Justice's tactics concerning the Trump Campaign," Sanders said in a statement.

The White House will set up a meeting with the FBI, the Justice Department and the intelligence community to let congressional leaders review classfied information related to Trump's accusations, Sanders said.

The FBI was looking into Trump election campaign ties to Russia before Special Counsel Robert Mueller took over the probe a year ago.

Meanwhile, Trump attacked Russia probe into possible collusion between his campaign and Russia as a "political hit job.

In the latest salvo from Trump's administration and his Republican Party, the president assailed former CIA chief John Brennan, who headed CIA from 2013 to 2017, as having initiated the investigation.

"This was a Political hit job, this was not an Intelligence Investigation," Trump said in a series of tweets, quoting Fox News commentator Dan Bongino.

Meanwhile, veteran CIA officer Gina Haspel was sworn in as the agency's first female director Monday. The 61-year-old Haspel, a Russia specialist who spent her career in the Central Intelligence Agency's clandestine service, takes over from Mike Pompeo, whom Trump recently made his secretary of state.
