2002: US President George W Bush appointed Henry Kissinger to lead an independent investigation of the government's failure to prevent the Sept 11 attacks.
2003: Taiwan's parliament approved a landmark bill that allowed the island to hold referendums on sovereignty and other issues, despite warnings from China.
2005: An explosion ripped through the state-owned Dongfeng coal mine in China's northeastern Heilongjiang province, killing 171 miners.
