Gaza Massacre

Reactions

Israel faced widespread condemnation after its forces killed 60 Palestinians in Gaza during protests coinciding with the opening of the US embassy in Jerusalem.

United States: The White House blamed the bloodiest day in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict in years on Hamas, the Islamist movement that runs the Gaza Strip. It also blocked a Kuwait requested emergency meeting of the UN Security Council.

Palestinian reaction: Palestinian president Mahmud Abbas condemned Israeli "massacres", saying "the US is no longer a mediator in the Middle East," and rejected the new embassy  in Jerusalem. Hamas vowed revenge.

Arab League: The Arab League urged the International Criminal Court prosecutor to urgently investigate "the crimes of the Israeli occupation" against Palestinians. It will hold emergency talks today to discuss what it has called Washington's "illegal" relocation of its embassy to Jerusalem.

United Nations: The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Zeid Ra'ad Al Hussein, said: "Those responsible for outrageous human rights violations must be held to account."

Rights groups: Amnesty International said the bloodshed was an "abhorrent violation" of human rights, and "appear to be wilful killings constituting war crimes". Human Rights Watch also denounced the "bloodbath".

Turkey: "Israel is wreaking state terror. Israel is a terror state," President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said. Turkey announced it was recalling its ambassadors to the US and Israel "for consultations".  Terming the killings as genocide, Turkish PM Binali Yildirim said Muslim countries should review their ties with Israel.

Russia: The Kremlin urged countries to avoid action that might inflame tensions in the Middle East.

China:  China expressed concern and called for restraint, "especially" from Israel, after the bloodshed. It reiterated Beijing's support for a two-state solution, with the establishment of a Palestinian state based on 1967 borders with East Jerusalem as its capital.

France, UK, Germany: France reaffirmed criticism of the  embassy move. UK and Germany called for an independent investigation into what has happened.

Egypt: Egypt's foreign ministry called those killed "martyrs" and warned against "this serious escalation".

Saudi Arabia:  The kingdom rejected Us’s Jerusalem embassy move saying "this step represents a significant prejudice against the rights of the Palestinian people which have been guaranteed by international resolutions."
