Workers' strike withdrawn
Bangladeshi migrant workers in Iraq who had been observing work abstention protesting assault on a co-worker by Iraqi police and lack of security at their workplace withdrew their strike yesterday.
“We have rejoined work after our company assured us that necessary steps would be taken to solve our problems,” one of the migrants told The Daily Star through an email.
He said the Iraqi army inspects their labour camp regularly to check for Sunni rebels.
On Saturday, several hundred Bangladeshis, who had been hired by South Korean company Hanwha Engineering and Construction, went on work abstention. The workers are working on the Bismaya New City Project in Baghdad.
Meanwhile, the Bangladeshi embassy in Iraq informed Secretary at the Ministry of Expatriates' Welfare and Overseas Employment Khondaker Showkat Hossain that Iraqi police arrested the Bangladeshi national over his alleged links with Sunni rebels. The worker was later released.
“The assault on the Bangladeshi worker has fuelled workers' anger. The situation is now under control,” Showkat Hossain told reporters at the ministry yesterday.
He said Bangladeshis are safe in Iraq and there is no security concern in Iraq.
