Wahidur was never a freedom fighter
A group of freedom fighters from Chouddagram upazila of Comilla yesterday claimed that the immediate past chief engineer of the Local Government Engineering Department, Wahidur Rahman, had never been a freedom fighter.
Wahidur hails from Chouddagram and enjoyed a three-year extension as LGED chief engineer till 2013 for providing a freedom fighter's certificate, which, according to the Anti-Corruption Commission, was obtained without the due procedure.
Addressing a press conference at Dhaka Reporters Unity, Golam Moinuddin Pintu, assistant commander of Comilla district unit of Muktijoddha Command Council, said Wahidur's name was not included in the Mukti Barta (Red Book), and he did not have a certificate signed by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
Golam Moinuddin also demanded punishment for Wahidur for deriving government benefits out of his fake freedom fighter's certificate.
Wahidur was made chief engineer of the LGED in 2009. His tenure was supposed to end after two years. But he got a three-year job extension in two phases.
Later on December 12, 2013, he obtained a one-year contract to continue as LGED chief engineer. He finally retired on December 12, 2014.
Recently the ACC found in an investigation that Wahidur resorted to fraudulence to obtain the certificate, sources said.
Golam Moinuddin, also war-time commander for Chouddagram, alleged that Wahidur spent a huge amount of money to be elected a leader of Bangladesh Muktijoddha Sangsad, a welfare organisation for Liberation War heroes.
Responding to a query, Moinuddin said they raised their voice against Wahidur in 2010 and wrote to the prime minister for taking action against him.
Wahidur was elected vice-chairman of Bangladesh Muktijoddha Sangsad Central Command Council in June last year.
