Verdict on Kamaruzzaman appeal any day
The Supreme Court will deliver its verdict any day on an appeal filed by war criminal Jamaat leader Muhammad Kamaruzzaman challenging death penalty awarded to him for his wartime offences.
A four-member bench of the Appellate Division headed by Justice Surendra Kumar Sinha today kept the appeal waiting for verdict after concluding hearings for 16 days.
The International Crimes Tribunal-2 on May 10 last year sentenced the Jamaat assistant secretary general to death for his crimes against humanity during the country’s Liberation War in 1971.
He submitted his appeal to the apex court challenging the ICT judgement on June 6 last year.
During today’s hearing, Attorney General Mahbubey Alam prayed to the court to uphold the tribunal’s verdict saying that charges brought against Kamaruzzaman have been proved without any doubt.
Kamaruzaman’s lawyer SM Shahjahan prayed to the court to acquit his client saying that the charges brought against him were “false and baseless”.
