Verdict delayed ‘at Delhi’s instruction’
BNP senior leader ASM Hannan Shah today alleged that the verdict against Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Motiur Rahman Nizami in war crimes trial has been deferred “at the instruction of New Delhi”.
“Why the verdict was not announced today? Information available from Raw (Research and Analysis Wing--Indian Secret Service Agency) indicates that the verdict was deferred due to the upcoming visit of Indian External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj to Dhaka,” said the BNP standing committee member.
The retired brigadier general added that Jamaat might have enforced hartal if verdict was announced and a conflicting situation could be created in the country, causing damage to the Sheikh Hasina government’ image.
“That’s why the verdict was not announced,” Hannan Shah said while speaking at a discussion at the Jatiya Press Club.
Aporajeyo Bangladesh organised the discussion titled ‘Bangladesh, a valley of panic: doable for establishing peace’.
Earlier in the day, a special tribunal in Dhaka postponed the pronouncement of the verdict against Nizami due to his illness.
