Verdict biased: Gonojagoron Mancha
Minutes after the Supreme Court commuted the death sentence of Jamaat leader Delawar Hossain Sayedee, Gonojagoron Mancha rejected the verdict terming it “biased”.
“It is a biased verdict that is aimed at establishing the politics of Jamaat and Shibir,” Imran H Sarker, spokesperson of a faction of the Gonojagoron Mancha, said while giving his instant reaction to reporters at Shahbagh today.
“The verdict is an outcome of a compromise (of the government) with Jamaat,” Sarker said.
Protesting the verdict, the activists of Gonojagoron Mancha brought out a procession from Shahbagh and marched towards the Supreme Court.
The activities of the Mancha, a pro-liberation platform, picked up a scuffle with policemen when they tried to remove the barricades in front of the SC.
Sarker alleged that the government split the platform in two in a preplanned manner to divide the unity of the young generation against such verdicts.
Meanwhile, the other faction of the Gonojagoron Mancha led by Kamal Pasha also brought out a procession from Shahbagh in protest against the verdict.
POLICE ACTION ON MANCHA ACTIVISTS
After the Sarker-led procession returned to Shahbagh, police charged batons and lobbed teargas canisters to disperse the group.
Police went on action as the Mancha activists tried to occupy Shahbagh intersection, Shibli Noman, superintendent of Ramna zone police, told The Daily Star.
“They were trying to create chaos. The law enforcers dispersed them to avert any possible effort for anarchy,” he said.
Our Dhaka University correspondent said at least four people were injured. Of them, Imran was taken to Dhaka Medical College and Hospital for treatments.
