US envoy appreciates courage of tribunals' judges
Visiting Stephen J Rapp, US ambassador-at-large for the office of global criminal justice, today appreciated the courage of the judges of International Crimes Tribunals who are dealing with the war crimes cases.
"It's so important that the judges are able to do their job without pressure and politics. I very much salute their service and courage", Rapp told reporters after emerging from a meeting with the tribunals' judges.
Rapp reached the tribunals' office at the Old High Court building around 1:20pm and held a one-hour meeting with the judges.
Prior to the meeting, Rapp met the tribunals' investigation agency members at its Dhanmondi office in the capital.
He has arrived Dhaka this morning on a three-day visit.
During his stay in Dhaka, he is expected to meet the law minister, foreign minister and foreign secretary, and is scheduled to hold a press briefing.
Rapp visited Bangladesh several times in the last few years. During his last trip in May 2013, he expressed satisfaction over the war crime trials in Bangladesh, but said the process had not fully maintained international standards.
