Two killied in 'gunfight' in 2 dists
Two people including a local BNP leader were killed in separate incidents of 'gunfights' with law enforcers in Noakhali and Sirajganj early today.
Touhidul Islam Touhid, a former joint convener of BNP's Sonaimuri upazila unit in Noakhali, was killed in gun battle with police.
On the other hand, Mohammad Bablu, 32, a member of a robbery gang, was killed during a gunfight with Rapid Action Battalion members in Sirajganj.
Touhid was arrested near Jatiya Press Club in Dhaka Tuesday, reports our Noakhali correspondent quoting the victim's younger brother Kamal.
After Paltan police station of Dhaka handed him over to Noakhali police, Touhid was taken to the local police lines yesterday.
Based on information gleaned from Touhid, police along with the victim conducted a raid at his Bhadragaon residence around 4:00am and recovered a cut rifle and five bullets, said Anisur Rahman, superintendent of police in Noakhali.
When they reached at Modi village on way to the police station, the cohorts of Touhid opened fire, prompting the lawmen to shoot 40 bullets, the SP said.
Touhid sustained bullet wounds in his leg during the gunfight, the SP said adding that he succumbed to his injuries at Noakhali Medical College and Hospital.
Touhid, son of Master Nurul Islam, was accused in a number of cases, the police official said.
SIRAJGANJ
Bablu, son of Abdul Wahab of Baoitara village in Sadar upazila, was killed when his associates engaged in a gunfight with a team of Rab-12 in the town around 1:00am.
He was the No.2 accused in Awami League leader Saiful Islam murder case. Islam was AL youth and sports secretary in Sirajganj Sadar upazila unit, reports our Pabna correspondent.
Ashok Pal, commander of Rab-12, said a team of the elite force conducted a raid at Kato Adda in China project area of the town after receiving information that a gang of robbers were holding a secret meeting there.
Sensing presence of the elite force members, the gang opened fire on them forcing the Rab men to retaliate with bullets, he said.
Bablu was caught in the line of fire during the 20-minute 'gunfight' and died on the spot, he added.
After all the members of the gang managed to flee the scene, the Rab team recovered one Light Gun (LG), one revolver, four cocktails and some sharp weapons from the spot.
