Truckers protest illegal toll collection
Transport workers formed a human chain at Mission intersection in the district town yesterday, protesting illegal toll collection.
Over 100 truck drivers and helpers joined the programme in the morning and later brought out a procession in the town.
Addressing a rally, the transport leaders and workers alleged a section of transport workers, led by Pulin- Kalam group, has been collecting illegal tolls from the vehicles at different parts of the district in the name of Sramik Kalyan Fund (Workers' Welfare Fund) for long.
Ironically, the families of those workers, who died and sustained injuries in the road accidents, are yet to get any help from the fund, they said.
The group, backed by the men of ruling AL, recently grabbed the district Truck and Tank Lorry Sramik Union office in the town by arranging false election, alleged Abdur Rahman, a truck driver.
He further said that Pulin- Kalam group filed a false case, accusing the transport workers who staged a movement against the so called union.
Rahman also threatened to go for a tougher agitation if the false case was not withdrawn immediately.
Contacted, president and general secretary of district Truck and Tank Lorry Sramik Union Pulin Chandra Roy and Abul Kalam said their panel has been elected as per rule and regulation of the organisation and they have been working for the welfare of transport workers.
A case was lodged as their office came under attack in the dark of night, they said.
