Nine policemen have been killed in a militant attack in Myanmar's western Rakhine state, police says, as tensions ratchet up in a state riven by ethnic and religious conflict.

Thailand's foreign ministry, in a rare statement on an ongoing crisis in neighbouring Myanmar's Rakhine state, says that it was "closely following the situation" and would provide aid to the governments of Myanmar and Bangladesh.
