BRACU organises faculty-student chess match
BRAC University Chess Club (BUCHC) organised a friendly chess match between the team of faculty members and of students on November 1, 2016 as part of its promotional activities to encourage students to play chess. The faculty team and the student team were selected from a faculty chess tournament and a student chess tournament respectively. The event was inaugurated by Grandmaster Niaz Murshed.
VC of BRACU Prof. Syed Saad Andaleeb, Ph.D., who was a chess player at the national level, led the team of the faculty. Prof. Andaleeb in his short inaugural speech said that this was a wonderful initiative helping to ease teacher-student relations and it could develop co-operative relationships in academic learning.
Other members of the team were Shams Ud Duha, lecturer of the BRAC Institute of Languages (BIL) who has his name listed in international ratings, Academic Coordinator of MA in TESOL Program Dr. Sayeedur Rahman and senior lecturer Noman Hossain Chowdhury of BRAC Business School.
Syed Ejaz Hussain, an MA in TESOL student and a champion at national level competitions held for the blind, led the students' team, which included BRAC Business School student Sabbir Hossain, computer science and engineering student Galib Ashraf and electrical and electronic engineering student Saif Hossain.
The team of the faculty was adjudged the winner with a score of 5.5 against the 2.5 scored by the team of the students.
NSUAPC organise IIUPE 2016
International Inter University Photography Exhibition (IIUPE) 2016 was organised by the North South University Arts and Photography Club on November 5-7, 2016 at Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy. "During Liberation War in 1971, a photograph played a vibrant role in raising public opinion globally and raised awareness from all over the world," said A.K.M Mozammel Haque, Minister of Liberation War Affairs, chief guest at the event.
Prof. Atiqul Islam, VC, NSU chaired the exhibition. Azim Uddin Ahmed, Chairman, NSU BOT, and Dr. M. Emdadul Haq, Director of Student Affairs were the special guest and guest of honour. For the first time the event will be held beyond Bangladesh at ICCR (Indian Council for Culture & Relations), Kolkata, India on November 16-18. Closing ceremony of this exhibition will be held at NSU campus on December 1, 2016.
The 10th IUPE has outgrown all the previous statistics with 41 participating countries, 188 universities from home and abroad where 934 photographers submitted 8253 photographs and 64 photo-stories in the primary level. From these, 198 best photographs and 4 photo-stories were chosen.
The jury panel of IIUPE is consisted of ex-jury member of World Press Photo and cross-genre photographer of India Swapan Parekh, Tanzim Wahab, Chief Curator of Bengal Art Foundation from Bangladesh and K.M. Asad, Photographer, Zuma Press, USA sorted out the most deserving entries. Tanvir Murad Topu, Head of Photography at Pathshala South Asian Media Institute organised the exhibition with his creative view.
"Malaysia Education Lead Meet 2016" invites students
Malaysia has now become a popular study destination because of its high standards of education, affordable fees and living expenses, multi-cultural and safe environment, etc. Apart from Malaysian local universities, several universities from Australia and the UK have campuses in Malaysia.
The primary objective of the event is to enable Bangladeshi students to make informed decision about their studies in overseas, and to choose the top ranked universities in Malaysia as their first preferences. Most importantly, this will create a positive impression about tertiary education in Malaysia. The students and parents will also be able to talk to the representatives one to one and ask any queries that they may have.
Representatives from the Malaysia campuses of The University of Nottingham, Heriot-Watt University, Curtin University, Swinburne University and two Malaysian universities, Taylor's University and INTI International University are the event.

Textile Engineering wins DIU Inter Department Cricket Tournament
Textile Engineering (TE) Department became champion while Computer Science and Engineering (CSE) Department became runner-up in Daffodil International University Inter Department Cricket Tournament 2016.
Textile Engineering (TE) collected 96 runs losing 8 wickets and won by 2 wickets. Jewel of Textile Engineering (TE) was adjudged as the "Man of the Match" while Shariful Saikat of Business Administration was the "Man of the Tournament".
Prof. Dr. Yousuf M Islam, VC of DIU was present as the chief guest and distributed prizes. Prof. Dr. Mostafa Kamal, Director (Permanent Campus) and Dr. A B M Mostafa Kamal, Advisor, DIU Sports Club were also present.
Certificate awarding ceremony at IUBAT
International University of Business Agriculture and Technology (IUBAT) arranged the "Certificate Awarding Ceremony for Summer and Spring 2016 on British Council Book Reading Competition" on November 2, 2016 at IUBAT Conference Hall, in collaboration with Department of Languages, IUBAT and British Council, Dhaka. Prof. Dr. Mahmuda Khanum, VC (Acting) of IUBAT presided over the programme.
At the outset, Dr. Momtazur Rahman, Associate Professor and Coordinator, Department of Languages, IUBAT, delivered his welcoming address. Chief guest Kendall Robbins, Acting Director, British Council, was present at the ceremony. Winners Prantik uz Zaman and Farhana Kabir, students of Computer Science and Engineering of IUBAT, received a laptop each and shared their feelings regarding the Book Reading Competition.
BUET to hold debate championship
Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology Debating Club (BUETDC) is organising the "12th Inter-faculty Debate Championship 2016" on November 10-11, 2016 in Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology campus. The Daily Star will cover the whole event as the Media Partner.
There are five faculties in BUET - Faculty of Civil Engineering, Faculty of Mechanical Engineering, Faculty of Electrical & Electronic Engineering, Faculty of Architecture & Planning and Faculty of Engineering. Members from any of these faculties will be able to participate in this competition.
The debate will be conducted in both Bangla and English, and in the British Parliamentary format. Around 40+ teams, consisting of 120+ individuals are going to participate. Interested spectators can watch the debates live without any registration. In the previous edition of this event, Faculty of Mechanical Engineering was crowned champions and Faculty of Civil Engineering was the runner-up. Economic Department starts its journey at EDU
East Delta University (EDU), Chittagong launched its new Economics department as Bachelor of Arts (Honours) degree under School of Liberal Arts and Social Science. Sayeed Al Noman, Founder Vice Chairman of the University said, "Global leadership and politics are being driven directly or indirectly by economics."
A seminar was also organised on the occasion of launching the department at EDU extended office at Probortok recently, while Prof. Muhammad Sikander Khan, VC, EDU, Prof. Dr. Mohammad Abul Hossain, Dean of Social Science, Chittagong University, economist Prof. Jyoti Prakash Dutta, Dr. Mohammad Nazim Uddin, Associate Dean of EDU, and Coordinator of the Department Anannya Nandi were also present.
