Sheikh Jamal turn on the style
Sheikh Jamal DC consolidated their lead in the Nitol Tata Bangladesh Premier League with an emphatic 4-1 win over holders Sheikh Russel KC in their last match of the second phase at the Bangabandhu National Stadium yesterday.
Haitian striking duo Sony Norde and Wedson Anselme struck a brace apiece to put Sheikh Jamal in the pole position of the ten-team table with 42 points from 18 matches, eight clear of nearest rivals Abahani while Sheikh Russel stayed at seventh position with 17 points from 15 matches.
Following two successive draws, the club management of Sheikh Jamal appointed Maruful Haque as its technical adviser and the former Sheikh Russel coach might have had an influence on the players, most of whom played under his guidance in the previous season.
However, the charges of Joseph Afusi put on a brilliant show with Sony and Wedson making the difference as the Haitian duo shared three goals in ten minutes to kill off the contest before half time. Wedson then struck the fourth in the second half to humiliate a depleted Sheikh Russel, who played with only one foreign player due to the departure of most of their foreign recruits following the end of their contacts.
Sony put the leaders ahead in the 19 minutes before Wedson doubled the lead three minutes later. Sony then took the match away from Sheikh Russel striking his second from close range in the 29th while Wedson struck the fourth in the 70th minute before Anwar Hossain netted a consolation goal for Sheikh Russel in the 74th minute.
Meanwhile, Muktijoddha Sangsad moved up to fourth position after a 2-0 win over newcomers Uttar Baridhara Club in the second match of the day. After a barren first half, Sunday Chizoba and Mohammad Ibrahim struck one goal each to raise Muktijoddha Sangsad's points to 26 from 17 matches while Baridhara remained at eighth position with 12 points from 18 matches.
