Robber killed in gunfight with cops in Barguna
A robber was killed in a gunfight with police at Gulishakhali village in Amtali upazila of Barguna district early yesterday.
The deceased was identified as Md Mozammel, 45 of Titkata village under Patuakhali Sadar upazila. Six other members of the gang were arrested while they were fleeing the scene.
The arrestees are Ansar Ali, 35, Jahirul Islam, 32, and Bachchu, 30 of Titkata village under Patuakhali Sadar upazila; and Masum, 32, Anis, 34, and Nasir, 35 of Gulishakhali village in Amtali upazila of Barguna.
Four policemen sustained injuries during the gunfight. They are sub inspectors Jahirul Islam and Mozammel, and constables Tariqul Islam and Abdul Bari of Amtali Police Station. They took first aid at Amtali Upazila Health Complex, said Officer-in-Charge Sukumar Roy.
Acting on a tip-off, a police team raided Gulishakhali village where a gang of robbers were taking preparation at around 3:30am to commit a robbery at the village.
Sensing the presence of the police team, the robbers opened fire, prompting the law enforcers to retaliate.
Police said Mozammel received bullets during the gunfight and died on the spot. Six of his cohorts were arrested while the rest managed to escape, they added.
Police found seven bullets and four crude bombs on the spot, the OC said, adding that Mozammel's body was sent to Barguna General Hospital morgue to autopsy.
Mozammel was wanted in 12 criminal cases filed with different police stations in Barguna and Patuakhali districts, police sources said.
