Remove structures from Buriganga in 72 hrs: HC
The High Court today directed the government to remove all structures from the river Buriganga at Badamtoli, Wise Ghat and Shyambazar areas by the next 72 hours.
In response to a writ petition, the court also asked the government to run mobile courts in those areas so that establishments cannot be built on the land of the river.
The court also issued a rule upon the government to explain in two weeks why it should not be directed to evict land grabbers’ from the river.
The HC bench of Justice Moyeenul Islam Chowdhury and Justice Md Ashraful Kamal came up with the order and rule following the writ petition filed by Human Rights and Peace for Bangladesh.
Petitioner's counsel Manzill Murshid said the HC in June 2009 had directed the government to remove all structures from the land of the river. But the directives were not implemented in the areas.
In the petition, the HRPB prayed to the court to pass necessary directives on the government to stop encroachment of the river and evict the structures.
