Qurbani pointers
One of the biggest concerns after having purchased a cow during Qurbani Eid is how to conduct the slaughter in the right manner. A few of the needed steps have constantly been repeated.
First of all, the main thing to remember is that the sacrificial animal must come to no undue harm. One should not torture the animal in anyway whatsoever and ensure freely available food and water. At the same time, the location where the animal has been kept must be kept clean. Bright lights tend to scare the animals, so this should be remembered as well. We must understand that we will be held accountable for the way the animal is treated.
Before the slaughter, tradition suggests we give the cow a proper bath. Here, the men in the family ought to play an active role. Buying your cow or goat, a few days in advance is good practice. Those who sacrifice the animal must tend to it as well. This will help develop an attachment with the animal, however fleeting. Such an attachment will help add further value to your sacrifice, as it won’t any longer be a monetary one.
To not make a big mess, the slaughter should take place over a drain, or a hole in the ground, where the blood can accumulate. Islamic scholars advice that the animal be slaughtered in not more than three strokes so as to not make the animal suffer. One should clean the ground of all the blood before bringing the next animal, as the smell of blood can distress the animal.
A new school of thought has emerged where it is being questioned why the authorities do not provide the proper platform, such as designated slaughterhouse for the entire community to use. The answer is that not enough people have demanded it. However, if such a community slaughterhouse is set up for the duration of Qurbani Eid, the cleanliness of entire areas can be more easily maintained.
Always remember to clean the blood off the streets and dump it all away in such a way so that it drains away. In the end, do not stray away from the original purpose of the sacrifice and have a great Eid!
