Tarique verdit: BNP takes up fresh protest programme
BNP today announced fresh programme in protest of a High Court verdict that sentenced its leader Tarique Rahman to seven years’ imprisonment and fined him Tk 20 crore in a graft case.
The party will hold rallies and processions at all upazilas and city corporations including Dhaka on Wednesday.
BNP Senior Joint Secretary General Rizvi Ahmed announced the protest programme through a press conference at the party’s Nayapaltan central office.
BNP senior vice-chairman Tarique was sentenced to seven years' imprisonment and fined Tk 20 crore by the HC on July 21 in a money laundering case.
The HC overturned a lower court verdict that acquitted Tarique in the money laundering case involving Tk 20.41 crore.
On November 17 of 2013, a Dhaka court acquitted Tarique Rahman while jailed his friend and business partner Giasuddin Al Mamun for seven years along with a fine of Tk 40 crore in the case filed by Anti-Corruption Commission for illegally sending Tk 20.41 crore to Singapore between 2003 and 2007.
The party earlier staged protest rallies and processions at district and upazila levels on Saturday and held a rally in the capital on Sunday on the same issue.
Lambasting ruling Awami League, Rizvi in the briefing said AL is no more a political party at present as the party has lost its past heritage and derailed from its multi-party democratic values.
