BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia today hoped that President Abdul Hamid would take an initiative to hold the next election under an election-time government.
“An impartial Election Commission is not enough for holding a free and fair election. That’s why we’ve urged the president to take measures for an election-time government during talks with him,” she said at a programme in Dhaka this evening.
The former prime minister also extended her thanks to the president for initiating talks on formation of the new Election Commission.
She was addressing the programme marking the 38th founding anniversary of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal at the Institute of Engineers’ Bangladesh in Dhaka.
Criticising Awami League’s rigid stance on hanging on to power, she said it is passing new laws frequently and destroying the country and its young generation intending to cling on to power forever.
Describing the government as autocratic and unelected, she said, “Why Awami League does not want to stay aside from power? None can enjoy power for forever.”
She also blamed the government for deterioration of the law and order situation and killing of people in crossfire, abduction and disappearance and urged it to stop the prevailing disorder for the sake of people’s lives and properties.
Khaleda also slammed the present opposition party in the parliament and said it has been turned into a slave of the government from the very beginning of the incumbent parliament.
While referring to the fire at a Santal village in Gaibandha's Gobindaganj upazila, Khaleda Zia also accused the ruling party’s student and youth fronts leaders of killing people by throwing petrol bombs on buses during the anti-government movement last year.
“Police have set fire to a Santal village in Gaibandha. Similarly, Chhatra League and Jubo League leaders with the help of police have killed people throwing petrol bombs on buses during our anti-government movement,” Khaleda said.
Khaleda called upon the student leaders and activists to be prepared for waging movement at the right time and asked them to refrain from chanting slogans wrongly.
“You should refrain from doing politics with the slum people. I believe in quality instead of quantity.”
Khaleda also criticised her party’s student front leaders and activists as they did not know what proposal BNP has submitted before the president during talks.
About quality education, Khaleda said the country’s education system has been destroyed due to the “faulty educational and examination process”.
