'Attempt to keep Tarique from politics'
Tarique Rahman’s graft conviction is an attempt to keep him away from Bangladesh politics, BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir alleged today.
The verdict was motivated from political rivalry, Shairul Kabir Khan, an official of the BNP chairperson's press wing, conveyed Fakhrul’s statement to The Daily Star.
BNP leader Fakhrul made the reaction over a phone call after the High Court handed seven-year imprisonment and fine to BNP Senior Vice Chairman Tarique Rahman scrapping his acquittal in a Tk 20.41 crore money laundering case.
Fakhrul is now in London to participate a discussion programme on Bangladesh at the House of Commons, lower house of the British parliament.
Previously, a lower court had acquitted Tarique of charges and sentenced his friend Mamun to seven years of imprisonment with Tk 40 crore fine. ACC appealed against the verdicts.
Tarique’s acquittal scrapped for destroying Zia family
Rizvi alleged that the scrapping of the acquittal of its senior vice-chairman Tarique Rahman in a money laundering case is aimed at destroying Zia family and weaken the nationalist forces.
“The lower court has acquitted Tarique Rahman in the case as there was no evidence regarding Tarique Rahman’s involvement in the money laundering case, but the government appealed against the verdict by its subservient Anti-Corruption Commission to fulfill its desire and political vengeance,” said BNP senior joint secretary general Ruhul Kabir Rizvi.
“We think it (Tarique’s punishment) is a part of the government’s blue print to destroy Zia family and the nationalist forces,” he further said.
The BNP leader came up with the allegation at a press briefing at BNP’s Nayapaltan Central office.
