Ashraf asks BNP to keep EC above controversy
Awami League General Secretary and Minister for Public Administration Syed Ashraful Islam today called upon BNP leaders to keep all the constitutional institutions including the Election Commission (EC) above controversies.
"If we indulge in unnecessary debates over the constitutional institutions, there will be no civilisation and no law. How democracy will work here in the country?" he posed a question.
Syed Ashraf said this at a press conference emerging from a joint meeting of Awami League (AL) at the political office of party President Sheikh Hasina at Dhanmondi in the city.
The meeting was convened to make success the mass reception to be accorded to Awami League President and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on her way to official residence Gano Bhaban from Shahjalal International Airport, after her arrival attending the 71st session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York City on September 26.
The AL joint meeting was held between its central leaders and presidents, general secretaries and party lawmakers (MPs) of the district units adjoining Dhaka district- Gazipur, Gazipur City, Manikganj, Munshiganj, Narayanganj, Narayanganj City, and Dhaka City.
Syed Ashraf said, "There will be no democracy and law if we make all the institutions controversial. Where shall we go if we make the High Court, the Supreme Court and the Election Commission controversial? There will be the absence of civilisation if we make all the constitutional institutions controversial."
"The president appoints the election commission. He talks with all on the matter. So, the election commission that to be appointed by the president will be acceptable to all. Where the place of our respect would be if we make such an institution (president) controversial? Let's all of us keep such institutions above controversies," he added.
Syed Ashraf said the country would surely turn into a developed state if it is run under the leadership of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina for another 10 years.
"Bangladesh is being applauded in the international arena owing to Sheikh Hasina. The country could hold its head high in the community of nations for her bold and firm leadership," the AL general secretary added.
Syed Ashraful Islam chaired the AL joint meeting, also attended, among others, by AL Joint General Secretary Mahbub-ul-Alam Hanif, organising secretaries BM Mozammel Haque, AFM Bahauddin Nasim and Khalid Mahmud Chowdhury.
