Woman knits tiny wool jumpers to keep her chickens warm
While many of us are busy preparing for the winter, very few spare any thought for our feathered friends!
Battery hens, which spend almost all of their lives in cages to lay eggs, face trouble to get used to normal outdoor conditions once they are released, particularly during winter due to their lack of feathers.
Nicola Congdon, 25, who resides in Falmouth of Cornwall in England, came up with an adorable idea about six months ago of knitting woolly jumpers for her battery hens to keep them warm this winter. She has about 60 chickens, 30 of which are battery hens, reports Mashable.
"It's important to make people aware of the poor conditions the hens live in and the fact that they have no feathers when they are retired," Nicola told Mashable, adding "The tank tops are also something really different that provide some fun for the chickens. They keep them warm and make the chickens easy to identify."
Hen-keepers near and far are now sending Nicola and her mother Ann special requests for the jumpers.
The money from selling the tank tops goes to an AIDS orphanage in South Africa, Nicola further said.
