Odhikar's Adilur shortlisted for Martin Ennals Award
Odhikar Secretary Adilur Rahman Khan has been short-listed for an international award conferred on human rights activists across the globe.
Two other finalists are Cao Shunli, a Chinese civil society activist who died in detention last month after the jury decided on her nomination; and Mexican land rights advocate Alejandra Ancheita, according to a Human Rights Watch (HRW) press note.
The names of the trio for the 2014 Martin Ennals Award for Human Rights Defenders was announced yesterday by the 10-member jury in Geneva, Switzerland, the press note adds. The award will be conferred on October 7 through announcement of the winner at a ceremony hosted by the city of Geneva.
The Detective Branch (DB) of police arrested Adilur from Gulshan on August 10 last year shortly after DB Inspector Ashraful Islam filed a general diary with Gulshan Police Station complaining that Odhikar published a false report that tarnished the image of the state, the government and law enforcement agencies.
Adilur is on bail now.
The annual award is selected by 10 international human rights groups including Amnesty International, and HRW, the press note adds.
