Demra massacre day today
Today is 'Demra massacre' day.
On this day in 1971, the Pakistani army with the help of their local collaborators killed over 800 people at Rupsi and Bausgari villages in Demra union, a Hindu-dominated area in Faridpur upazila of the district.
They started carrying out the deadly attack from midnight that continued early in the morning, said elderly people of the area.
“It was early hours on Baishakh 30, perhaps Friday. Several hundred people, mostly Hindus, took shelter at the villages as it was a Hindu majority area then. The occupation force with the help of their local collaborators attacked the innocent people of the villages,” said Khalilur Rahman, chairman of Faridpur Upazila Parishad.
Bodies of the victims lay scattered as the Pakistani army and their collaborators let loose a region of terror through killings, arson and looting in the area, he said.
In 2009, a memorial was built at Demra Baushgari village, commemorating the martyrs.
Various programmes have been chalked out to mark the day, said the organisers.
