Graft trial: Khaleda won’t appear in court tomorrow
BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia will not appear before the special court at Bakshi Bazar in Dhaka tomorrow for the hearing of Zia Orphanage and Zia Charitable Trust graft cases, a senior counsel of the BNP chief said today.
“The BNP chairperson has been suffering from eye ailment and she is preparing to go to London for treatment there. Therefore, she will not be able to appear before the special court tomorrow,” Khandker Mahbub Hossain, senior counsel for Khaleda, told The Daily Star.
Hossain, also an adviser to the BNP chief, said they will seek time from the court for the hearing of the two cases.
The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) filed both the cases against her during the army backed caretaker government in 2007 on charges of embezzlement of over Tk 8.20 crore by abusing power and forming the trust that “exists” only on paper.
On August 3, the special court in presence of Khaleda set August 10 for further hearing on the two cases.
Khaleda has been irregular in attending case proceedings. She has refrained from appearing before the court on 56 out of 63 dates for hearing in the two cases.
