TigerIT to build voter database for Nepal
A Bangladesh-based software developer will provide IT solutions to the national voter registration system of Nepal, as the local firm won an international bidding last month.
TigerIT Bangladesh will supply and install all required software and hardware for the system, comprising central, district and ward level applications.
“We have started working in Nepal from June 19, and the work will end in February next year,” said Mehrin Shahed, vice-president for business development at TigerIT.
The firm also developed the complete software solution for the national identity and voter registration project for Bangladesh in 2008.
After implementing the project, which is funded by the United Nations Development Programme, TigerIT will offer post-installation services for one year, Mehrin said.
The system is aimed at providing the Election Commission of Nepal with a trusted and comprehensive voter database, Mehrin said.
“It will ensure security and accountability of the country's voter registration process.”
She said there is a built-in support for the offline mode, so that the system can work even if some locations have intermittent or no internet connectivity.
One of the major goals of the system is to allow secured and reliable sharing of data between the Election Commission of Nepal and its external partners, Mehrin said.
The scope of development will cover voter registration with biometric and demographic data capture, secure data exchange mechanisms, strict access control system and thorough audit trails, she said.
As a national system, it will be designed for high-availability, automatic fail-over and scalability.
In addition, she said, TigerIT will ensure all related training, documentation and subsequent support and maintenance services.
This is not the first time that TigerIT is providing IT solutions outside Bangladesh. It had set up a software system for machine readable passports in Nepal and fingerprint solutions for the immigration department of Bhutan.
“We are happy to have the opportunity to work in Nepal again,” said Ziaur Rahman, chairman and chief executive officer of TigerIT.
“Working in such environments is beneficial for us, as it provides the opportunity to deliver consolidated ICT services that have a long-term socio-economic impact,” he said.
TigerIT is also working for several other projects like Rashtriya Swasthya Bima Yojna project of the Indian labour and employment ministry, and the high security driving licence project of Bangladesh Road Transport Authority.
