Progressive Islamic Alliance demands ban on Jamaat
Progressive Islamic Alliance, an alliance of like-minded Islamic political parties, yesterday demanded an immediate ban on Jamaat-e-Islami and pro-Jamaat student body Islami Chhatra Shibir.
They also demanded that the government pass a law to ensure punishment to the people who insult Islam and other religions; take steps to arrest all war criminals; and execute the verdicts in war crimes cases.
They made the demands at a human chain organised by the alliance before Jatiya Press Club in the capital.
Leaders and activists of different Islamic parties, including Bangladesh Tarikat Federation, Bangladesh Islami Front and Gono Front, participated in the programme.
Syed Nazibul Bashar Maizbhandari, chairman of the alliance, said some political parties were trying to destroy communal harmony to fulfil their ill motives by trying to ignite a religious fanaticism.
Jamaat-Shibir is yet to accept the independent sovereignty of Bangladesh, so they have no right to be a political party in the country. They were carrying out terrorist activities in the name of Islam to assume state power, he said.
Meanwhile, over 1,000 people brought out a 16-kilometres-long flambeau (moshal) procession in Khulna city yesterday, demanding capital punishment to war criminals; and ban on Jamaat-Shibir, reports our Khulna correspondent.
Under the banner of “Nirdoliyo Gonomancha”, the procession began in Phulbarigate area around 7:00pm and ended at Shibbari intersection.
