Plan for Rampal power plant opposed
Speakers at a seminar yesterday demanded that the government refrains from constructing the coal-based thermal power plant in Rampal upazila of Bagerhat, near the Sundarbans.
They emphasised conducting an international Environment Impact Assessment and making public the project's details to assess its positive and negative aspects. The seminar, “Rampal coal-based power plant project's impact on the Sundarbans and environment”, was organised by the National Committee to Protect Oil, Gas, Mineral Resources, Power and Ports in Khulna Press Club.
The government signed an agreement with India's state-run National Thermal Power Corporation on January 2012 to set up the 1,300-megwatt plant at Rampal, 14 kilometres away from the Sundarbans.
The committee Member Secretary Prof Anu Muhammad and Prof Abdullah Harun Chowdhury were present.
