FBCCI urges banks to work on holidays
The Federation of Bangladesh Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FBCCI) on Thursday urged all financial and related service providers to work on weekends and government holidays to recoup losses due to repeated strikes.
"Business community thinks that banks, stock exchanges, financial institutions including Bangladesh Bank, land and sea ports, shipping and customs need to remain open for overcoming losses due to frequent hartal and keeping economic activities moving," said a statement issued by the trade body.
The country's apex trade body made the call amid daylong nationwide strike enforced by the BNP-led 18-party alliance.
The statement said country's trade and commerce have faced a serious crisis and the economic activities are gradually getting sluggish due to repeated strikes for the last few months.
Political unrest, frequent programme like hartal are creating socio-political unrest and shuttering economic prospects both at home and abroad as it hampers export market.
Besides, it said, such activities are tarnishing country's image abroad.
Under these circumstances, the business body urged all banks, including the Bangladesh Bank, insurance companies, stock exchanges, sea and land ports, shipping and customs department and other relevant service providers to operate on weekends and government holidays.
