Robber suspect killed in Pirojpur ‘gunfight’ with cops
A robber suspect was killed in a so-called gunfight between a gang and police in Charani Pattashi village of Indurkani upazila in Pirojpur early yesterday.
Police including detectives arrested Jakir Hossain Akan, 54, in Khulna on Friday night on charges of robbery.
He is an accused of 11 cases filed with different police stations, said Nasir Uddin, officer-in-charge of Indurkani Police Station.
On information gleaned from the accused, the law enforcers took him to the village yesterday to recover firearms, claimed the OC.
When they rushed to the spot, a gang that took position there before opened fire on the law enforcers leading them to fire back in self-defence, the officer further claimed.
At one stage, the gang fled the scene and police found Jakir riddled with bullets, he said. Jakir was declared dead at Indurkani Upazila Health Complex.
They also found a gun, two sharp weapons and three bullets, the OC added.
According to a report of Ain o Salish Kendra, 275 people were killed during “gunfights” and “crossfires” in custody of law enforcers or being shot by them between January 1 and June 30 this year.
