Bus helper remanded

A Chittagong court yesterday placed bus helper Mohammad Manik on a three-day remand in a case filed for allegedly pushing a passenger off a running minibus on August 27.

Metropolitan Magistrate Al Imran passed the order after Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) produced him before the court, said Additional Deputy Commissioner (ADC) (prosecution) Nirmalendu Bikash Chawakrabarty of Chittagong Metropolitan Police (CMP).

PBI officials arrested Manik in Ramgati upazila of Laxmipur district on Saturday.

On August 27, Manik pushed a passenger off the minibus following an altercation over bus fare in City Gate area near the port city.

The bus ran over and killed Rezaul Karim Roni, 35, who was a businessman.

The death sparked protests among locals who barricaded the Dhaka-Chittagong highway in the area for nearly an hour.

A case was lodged with Akbar Shah Police Station accusing the bus driver and the helper.
