An unidentified man stabbed a Chhatra League activist at a dormitory of Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (Buet) in broad daylight yesterday.
With serious injuries to the head, back and the left eye, Arif Raihan Dwip, a third-year student of mechanical engineering and a resident student of Nazrul Islam Hall, is now admitted to Square Hospital in the capital.
As of filing this report around 1:10am today, surgeons were operating on Dwip. He was taken to the operating theatre around 8:30pm, a relative of the victim told The Daily Star.
Hall guard Zakir Hossain said he saw a punjabi-clad man, aged between 25 and 30, dragging Dwip down the stairs from the first floor of the dormitory around 11:30am. The attacker was carrying a bag on his back.
A fellow student, who happened to be nearby, went to Dwip's rescue but failed to free him from the attacker's clutches, Zakir said.
The guard and the student then scrambled to shut the two hall gates. But as they were closing the second gate, they heard a scream and returned to find Dwip lying in a pool of blood in front of the corridor and the attacker gone, Zakir said.
Dwip, a member of the Buet Chhatra League's convening committee, was rushed to Dhaka Medical College Hospital and later shifted to Square Hospital.
He had been given some 50 stitches in the head and back, said Pijush Kanti Mitra, a neurosurgeon at DMCH, adding the attack was made to kill Dwip.
Dwip's friends could not say who might be behind the attack.
Buet BCL leaders, however, claimed Jamaat-Shibir was involved in the violent assault.
Dwip's new roommate at the dormitory said Dwip was involved in the ongoing Shahbagh movement for capital punishment to war criminals and a ban on Jamaat-Shibir.
The university authorities have formed a three-member committee to investigate the incident and submit a report within seven days, hall provost Prof Afsar Ali said.
Police recovered a bloodstained machete and a bag, a punjabi and a topi from the spot. They were looking into the matter, said Harun-Ur-Rashid, deputy commissioner (Lalbagh) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police.
Traffic movement on the roads through and around Buet was suspended last night, as students came out of their halls to protest the attack.
