BOA gets sponsors' assurance
The Bangladesh Olympic Association (BOA) has been given assurance from the sponsors about providing Tk 20 to 22 crore to make Bangladesh Games a success while it has already been allocated Tk 5 crore by the government for the eighth edition of the extravaganza, which is scheduled to be held from April 20 to 28 in the capital.
The BOA had initially estimated a budget of Tk 10 to 12 crore for staging the Games featuring 31 disciplines, but the budget was doubled following the decision of staging a gala opening ceremony.
To meet the huge budget, the organising committee, headed by Finance Minister Abul Maal Abdul Muhith, met with the sponsors at a city hotel and the sponsors assured the BOA about providing Tk 20 to 22 crore.
“After the meeting on Monday, the Bankers' Association of Bangladesh (BAB) promised to provide Tk 10 crore, Grameenphone assured about Tk 5 crore and seven financial organisations owned by the governments such as Janata Bank, Sonali Bank, Jiban Bima Corporation will provide Tk 5 to 7 crore apart from the government's allocation of Tk 5 crore,” said vice president of Organising Committee Harunur Rashid adding that they would issue official letters to the respective sponsors within a couple of days.
Harun also informed that a total of 2260 medals – 703 gold, 703 silver and 854 bronze -- would be up for grabs in the Games even though the number of total events has not been finalised yet.
