19 arrested in Panchagarh for ‘spreading rumours’
Police have arrested 19 people on charge of spreading rumours about Ahmadiyya community in Panchagarh.
One of the arrestees was identified as Md Fazle Rabbi, 30,
He is the son of Solaiman Ali, joint convener of Panchagarh municipality BNP, said police.
Panchagarh Police Station Officer-in-Charge Abdul Latif Miah told The Daily Star over the phone in the morning that some youths, including Rabbi, went to different areas on motorcycles last evening and spread rumours that two people were murdered by the people of Ahmadiyya community.
After the rumour spread through Facebook and other social media, some miscreants blocked roads, set fire to a vehicle and looted a footwear shop in the town, our Thakurgaon correspondent reports quoting the OC.
Later, police conducted drives in different areas and arrested 19 people, including Rabbi, the police official said, adding that legal action will be taken against them.
The arrests were made two days after two persons were killed and at least 30 were injured in a clash between law enforcers and supporters of some Islamist organisations who were demonstrating against a programme of the Ahmadiyya community in Panchagarh.
