45% of bar dancers in Mumbai from UP, Bengal
Contrary to the state government's claim that Mumbai's dance bars attracted 'foreign girls who spoilt the city's moral fibre', statistics reveal that bar dancers were mostly migrants from small towns and villages in Maharashtra and other states who trickled in seeking a livelihood.
A survey conducted by SNDT Women's University and Forum Against Oppression of Women in 2006 showed the largest chunk came from UP (24.8%) and WB (20.6%). Around 12% were Mumbaikars; 5% from other parts of Maharashtra. Many were from traditional dancing communities.
