Pro-BNP-Jamaat RU teachers to boycott Jan 18 convocation

The panel of teachers backed by BNP-Jamaat of Rajshahi University yesterday will boycott its ninth convocation on January 18 bringing an allegation of “holding the event in a chaotic situation during the ongoing countrywide blockade”.
They were addressing a press conference on the campus.
Prof Shamsul Alam, convener of the white panel, said they requested the vice chancellor to defer the programme.
Contacted, VC Prof Muhammad Mizanuddin said he had no jurisdiction over the matter because the decision came from the chancellor's office.
Six DB police impersonators held

Police arrested six people impersonating DB police and recovered a fake revolver, two wireless sets and two handcuffs from them in Bakalia area of Chittagong city on Tuesday.
The arrestees -- Humayun Kabir, Ibrahim Khalil, Imran Ali, Md Mona, Shahjahan Hossain Munna, and Imran Hossain Shawkat -- impersonating DB police conduct robbery, said police.
On Tuesday night police detained Humayuna and Ibrahim while they, impersonating DB police, were taking a youth on a motorcycle to rob him.
Later, police arrested four others from the area.
Road crashes kill 3, injure 22

Two people died and 20 others were injured as a bus turned turtle after the driver lost control over the vehicle on Dhaka-Sylhet highway in Gausia area of Rupganj upazila in Narayanganj yesterday.
One of the deceased was Jaj Mian, 35, of Jamalpur.
In Bogra, Shouhardo, 08, died and his parents Abu Raihan and Saima Akhtar of Bogra town were injured when a motorcycle and a three-wheeler collided head-on on Bogra-Noagaon road in Arelia area of the town yesterday.
2 lakh Yaba pills seized, 6 including 4 Myanmar nationals held

Law enforcers detained six people and seized around 2 lakh Yaba tablets in Chittagong and Teknaf yesterday and Tuesday.
In Chittagong port area, Bangladesh Navy anti-smuggling cell seized around 1.40 lakh Yaba tablets worth Tk 7.7 crore from an engine-run boat after chasing it at the outer anchorage yesterday.
However, the smugglers jumped into the sea and escaped arrest.
In Teknaf municipal area, BGB personnel detained four Myanmar nationals with 60,000 Yaba tablets from No-3 Sluice Gate area in Naf River on Tuesday night.
In Chittagong city, police arrested Delwar Hossain, 21 and Md Faruk, 24, of Cox's Bazar with 500 Yaba tablets from Notun Bridge area yesterday.
Boy dies falling from roof in capital

A 12-year-old boy died after falling from the roof of their tin-shed house in the capital's Gendaria area yesterday.
The deceased, Akash, a student of class-6 of Gendaria High School, slipped down after he climbed up the roof to collect a kite stuck there and received serious injury, said police quoting the deceased's relatives.
He was rushed to Dhaka Medical College Hospital where doctors declared him dead.
Tea vendor kills driver in capital

A driver of a human hauler was stabbed to death allegedly by a tea vendor over a trifling matter in the capital's Darus Salam yesterday.
Mohammad Shahin, 19, was declared dead at Dhaka Medical College Hospital on arrival.
Rafiqul Islam, officer-in-charge of Darus Salam Police Station, said Shahin asked the tea vendor, Sujan, 19, for an empty can of condensed milk which he refused, triggering a quarrel and later Sujan stabbed him in the abdomen with a knife.
4 illegal brick kilns fined Tk 4 lakh

A mobile court of Chittagong district administration yesterday fined four brick kilns, situated within two kilometres of agricultural land, Tk 4 lakh for various irregularities in Dewannagar area of Hathazari upazila of Chittagong.
Hossain Bricks, Sonali Bricks, Shahjalal Bricks and Soudia Bricks were fined Tk 1 lakh each as the were found illegal and extracting soil from hill and agricultural land for making bricks and using wood as fuel.
Indo-Bangla regional meeting on trans-border issues ends

A two-day regional meeting on trans-border issues between Bangladesh and India concluded in Meghalaya's capital Shillong on Tuesday.
The officials from Sylhet and Mymensingh regions and the Indian state agreed to resolve the issues, including killing of civilians.
The 28-member Bangladesh team included deputy commissioner, additional deputy magistrate, BGB's battalion director, said Lt Col Shah Alam Chowdhury, director of 41 BGB battalion, Sylhet.
Smuggling of arms and drugs and human trafficking were, among others, discussed in the meeting.
