IS posts video of captive UK journo

The Islamic State group released a video yesterday of a British freelance photojournalist, John Cantlie, in which he says he is being held captive. There was no immediate threat to his life apparent in the video posted in YouTube. Cantlie, who had contributed to British newspapers including The Sunday Times and Sunday Telegraph, as well as to Agence France-Presse, said he was captured after travelling to Syria in November 2012.
BBC reporters 'badly beaten' in Russia

Three BBC journalists were assaulted in southern Russia while researching a story about soldiers "being killed at the Ukraine border," the company said yesterday after lodging a protest with Russian authorities. The incident is "clearly part of a coordinated attempt to stop accredited news journalists reporting a legitimate news story," the BBC said, calling for a thorough probe.
US carries out its 30th execution this yr

Texas, which has put more inmates to death than any other US state, on Wednesday executed child killer Lisa Coleman, one of only a handful of women on death row. Coleman's is the 30th execution in the United States since the beginning of the year, with nearly a third carried out in Texas. She is just the 15th woman put to death in the United States since capital punishment was restored in 1976.
13 die in Nigeria college shooting, blast

Boko Haram insurgents have been blamed after at least 13 people died during a shoot-out between police and suspected suicide bombers at a teacher training college in northern Nigeria on Wednesday. Most of the victims were in a lecture hall inside the Kano college, where the two gunmen opened fire on students.
