‘Self-employment of youths a must for poverty cut’

National Youth Day 2007 was observed in the country yesterday with a call for self-employment of the youths for establishing a nation free from poverty.
Different government and non-government organisations organised various programmes including rally, discussion meetings, seminars and mass gathering, highlighting this year's theme of the day 'Youths are Resources, Youths are Future."
Youth and Sports Adviser Tapan Chowdhury inaugurated the day's programme at Osmani Memorial auditorium by hoisting national flag and releasing pigeons and balloons.
He said youths should be more aware and attentive to self-employment as the country's future and progress depend on them.
"Participation of youth at every stage will be ensured so that they can lead the nation properly. Our caretaker government has given enough importance to this section of people," he added.
Tapan also distributed National Youth Award 2007 among the 16 self-employed young men and women.
Youth and Sports Secretary Golam Mustafa Talukder and Director General of the Department of Youth Development Ismail Hossain also addressed the function.
National Federation of Youth Organisations brought out a colourful procession from Osmani Auditorium that ended in front of the Shishu Academy after marching different streets.
The organisation also held a discussion meeting and a cultural programme at the Department of Youth Development in Motijheel to mark the day.
