Sylhet AL leaders in field for upazila polls
Enthused by recent polls results in four city corporations and nine pourasabhas in the country, Awami League aspirants have launched mass contact in all 12 upazilas in Sylhet to contest the upazila election, whenever held.
They feel they will do better in upazilas than in Sylhet City Corporation where AL backed candidate detained incumbent mayor Badruddin Ahmed Kamran won the August 4 polls with a big margin.
However, in most upazilas, there are several aspirants from the party, which may trigger intra-party feud at grassroots level, party leaders apprehend.
The Election Commission (EC recently said upazila polls could be held in October.
Grassroots AL leaders believe, EC will not allow much time for preparation or for campaign as it happened in the case of four city corporations and nine pourashavas.
Talking tom this correspondent yesterday, district AL chief ANM Shafique said party leaders in upazilas have already started campaign on their own.
“There are good candidates in each upazila in Sylhet.
“But we will have to go by the central committee's decision”, he added.
Former joint secretary of Sylhet district Awami League Ashfaque Ahmed and Sylhet city AL general secretary Misbah Uddin Siraj are considered a strong candidates for Sylhet Sadar upazila. But both are voters in Sylhet city and may be disqualified to contest for the post of upazila chairman, according to provisions of new electoral laws.
There are two others in the Sadar upazila. They are local Union Parishad chairman Sirajul Islam and former UP chairman Iqbal Hossain, party sources said.
The party has at least three candidates in Dakshin Surma upazila who are very much interested to contest for the post of upazila chairman. They are upazila AL chief Dr. Abdus Shakur, general secretary UP chairman Haji Rais Ali and former UP chairman Mainul Islam. All are campaigning in different ways, party sources said.
Fenchuganj upazila also has three AL men to vie for the post of Upazila Parishad chairman. They are former UP chairman Fazlur Rahman, local trades association chief Nurul Islam and upazila AL general secretary Abdul Basit Tutul.
In Companiganj upazila, four AL men are ready to join the polls race. They are former upazila chairman M Taiyebur Rahman, upazila AL chief Sajidul Haque Sajid , general secretary and local UP chairman Aftab Ali Kala and organising secretary Jahangir Alam.
In Gowainghat, upazila AL chief Md. Ibrahim, general secretary Golam Kibria Helal and former UP chairman Luthfur Rahman Lebu have already launched campaign. USA AL unit leader Faruque Ahmed is back home to join the race.
Zaintapur upazila AL chief Md. Abdullah, who is a former upazila chairman, and upazila AL joint secrtary Fayez Ahmed Babor are already in the field.
In Beanibazar upazila, former district AL joint secretary Abdul Khalique Mayon, upazila AL general secretary Atautr Rahman Khan and former chairman of Dubag Union Parishad Md. Nazim Uddin are on mass contact for the polls. They are also trying to get party nod.
In Golapganj, upazila, local AL chief Iqbal Ahmed Chowdhury and district AL leader Humayun Islam Kamal are on campaign, party sources said.
Kanaighat Degree college principal Sirajul Islam and Kanaighat Upazila AL general secretary Nizam Uddin Al Mizan are considered strong candidates for the upazila polls. They have started campaign.
Both the former district AL Joint secretary-Shah Farid Ahmed and AL leader-Shah Moshahid Ali are trying their best to get green signal from the party to run in the polls race in Biswanath upazila.
In Balaganj upazila, UP chairman Moshtaqur Rahman Mofur and UK Juba League leader Anwaruzzaman Chowdhury are on the line to contest for the post of Upazila chairman.
In Zakiganj, former upazila chairman and former district AL organising secretary Mashuq uddin Ahmed may contest again for the post. Local AL leaders former local UP chairman Abdul Khalique and advocate Sirajul Haque will be his rivals in seeking party nod, party sources said.
