Indian soldier, police officer killed in Kashmir fighting
An Indian soldier and a police officer were killed and three others were seriously wounded in a gunbattle with militants in revolt-hit Indian Kashmir on Sunday, an official said.
The fighting came a day after nine Indian soldiers were killed and 16 injured when their bus was hit by an improvised explosive device in the disputed Himalayan region.
Sunday's gunbattle took place in thick forest in Rajouri district as a team of security personnel were combed the area following a tip-off that militants were hiding out there, a defence spokesman said.
"A major and a constable were killed," said the spokesman, speaking from Indian Kashmir winter capital Jammu.
He said three of the security team were injured in the attack and were in a critical condition.
