Heavy rains across country
A buoyant monsoon, prodded by the low pressure emerging from the Bay of Bengal, triggered massive rainfalls across the country, of which 150mm were recorded in the capital in 30 hours till 12:00noon yesterday, met office sources said.
The low pressure, roosting in the northwest Bay since June 25, moved onshore on Saturday and merged with the monsoon axis over Gangetic West Bengal and adjoining areas.
It punched life to a sloth monsoon, since it arrived in force across the country on June 7.
The result was this season's record fall in the country, including the capital in 24 hours and in another six hours.
During the past 24 hours till 6:00am the capital had 111mm rains and another 39mm followed during the next six hours till 12:00noon yesterday. Of which 103mm fell between 12:00am till 6:00am.
The city's rains took place mainly last night and in the early hours of yesterday. It flooded the low-lying areas and streets.
So far between June 1 till yesterday, Dhaka city had 370mm rainfall, met sources said.
But, Wasa sources said their preparation for such heavy showers paid off this time. “We had serviced the drainage system well ahead of the arrival of the monsoon. So the rainwater did not take much time to clear,” an official of the Wasa told BSS.
Meanwhile, the met office expects more rains to come due to an active monsoon. Since the low left the Bay its legacy was still prevailing over the Bay.
A steep pressure gradient kept the sea turbulent with high winds and squally weather over the maritime ports of Chittagong, Cox's Bazar and Mongla. The ports have been advised to keep hoisted local cautionary signal number three.
All fishing boats and trawlers in the north Bay have also been asked to keep close to the coast and proceed with caution until further notice, the met sources added.
