Nilphamari flooding still precarious
Flooding of Dimla and Jaldhaka upazilas in Nilphamari district with the rise of Teeta and its tributaries and other rivers in Nilphamari including Saniajan, Buri Teesta, Deunai, Burikhora, Charalkanta, Jamuneswari, Panga still remains at a precarious level.
The rivers swelled as India opened all the gates of Gojaldoba barrage in the upstream to release the pressure of water from heavy rainfall in its territory and onrush of water from the hills.
BWDB sources quoted Gojaldoba barrage authority in India as saying that water level in Teesta River at Gojaldoba barrage point was 109.95 metres while water level of Domohoni River in India which falls into the Teesta was 85.76 metre yesterday noon.
This data indicated that the water from Gojaldoba barrage might come to Bangladesh after midnight yesterday, BWDB sources in Dalia said.
Water level in Teesta receded a little in last 24 hours but it is like to rise today (22.06.08) at night at Dalia point, said sources in BWDB, Dalia division.
A portion of the spur of WDB at Sonakhuli point of Jhunaghach Chapani union was damaged by the strong current of Teesta on Friday night and the embankment point of Teesta River at Bhabanchur and Gopaljhar in Jaldhaka upazila has become vulnerable, sources said.
The Gojaldoba barrage authority in India and the Teesta barrage authority in Bangladesh always exchange information about the water level of Teesta River everyday through wireless.
The water level in the Teesta stood at 52.01 metres at the Teesta barrage point at 3:00pm yesterday, which is 24cm below the danger mark -- 52.25 metres.
As the Teesta River started swelling on Friday night and rose at a level of 52.68 metres which is 43cm above the danger mark, vast area of Dimla and Jaldhaka upazilas was inundated and about 5,000 people became marooned in the Teesta shoals and the low-lying areas.
The situation continued worsening till Saturday noon.
The district administration yesterday distributed dry food and money among the 140 flood hit families who took shelter on the embankment of Teesta River on Friday night.
Dimla Upazila Nirbahi Officer Abdus Sabur Mondol, who visited several inundated Teesta shoals yesterday, said medical teams were sent to the flood affected areas to combat diarrhoea and all possible steps would be taken to help the victims.
About 1,500 maunds of harvested maize in Char Bhashani and Tapur Char had been damaged as floodwater entered into the house-yard of the farmers, Tepakharibari union parishad Chairman Rabiul Islam said.
