Khaleda Zia in the Washington Times
An article with the title “Zia: The thankless role in saving democracy in Bangladesh†written by the leader of the opposition Khaleda Zia was published in the Washington Times on January 30, 2013. First of all, there are a number of wrong statements; US was not one of the first nations who recognised Bangladesh after its independence. The US congressional caucus did not “condemn†the government of Bangladesh or Sheikh Hasina for removing Dr. Yunus from the Grameen Bank or for “trying only the opponents of the regime.†I guess only perhaps dissatisfaction was expressed; the US would not certainly remain friendly with a country whose government is condemned by it.
What is most disappointing about the article is that our great leader appears to have lost all sense of self-respect and patriotism. Bangladesh is a country of 150 million people, a country which won its independence through sacrifice of three million people, and this nation will certainly remain ready to make even a greater sacrifice to protect its independence. We wish to have friendly relations with all other countries, definitely with the US and the UK. We don't want any foreign power dictate our foreign policy, nor do we want to dictate anyone.
We do not want any foreign country to advise us about how we elect our government. When Khaleda Zia advises the US that "it may be accused of standing idle while democracy in Bangladesh is undermined and its economic allegiance shifts toward other growing world powersâ€, one gets the impression that she has a mission from the US to carry out, and it hurts us to believe that she is our leader, our potential next prime minister.
