BAU suspends 13 BCL activists
Bangladesh Agricultural University (BAU) yesterday suspended 13 leaders and activists of the now defunct BAU unit of Bangladesh Chhatra League for one semester for their involvement in a gunfight on January 19 that left a boy killed.
The expelled leaders included Shamsuddin Al Azad and Rafiquzzaman Emon, president and general secretary of the BCL unit, said BAU Proctor Prof Shahidur Rahman Khan.
The other expelled students are Parvez Kabir, Shaheen Mahmud, SM Raihan, Asaduzzaman Khokon, Anwar Parvez Ripon, Yeahiya Emran, Nayan Hawlader, Rubel Miah, Shakil Majumder, Rokonuzzaman, and Shahabuddin Shihab.
Ten-year-old madrasa student Rabbi from nearby Boira village was killed during the gunfight between two BCL factions on the campus and the university was closed indefinitely.
Hours after the violence, the central committee of BCL dissolved its BAU unit.
On January 20, the university authorities served show cause notices on 40 BCL men and asked them to explain in seven days their role in the violence.
The authorities formed two probe committees to investigate the violence on the campus and subsequent attacks on student dormitories by angry mobs from nearby villages over the death.
The suspension (from January-June, 2013) of the students is a preliminary action, mentioned the proctor adding, final action will be taken upon receiving reports of the probe committees.
