Footage questions autopsy report
The High Court yesterday observed that there were discrepancies between the autopsy report and the footage of Bishwajit Das killing incident.
It said the footage showed Bishwajit had sustained several injuries, but the autopsy report claimed that he had succumbed to only one stab injury measuring three and a half inches long and one and a half inches deep.
Bishwajit Das, a 24-year-old tailor, was beaten and hacked to death by a group of Chhatra League activists of Jagannath University on the morning of December 9, 2012 in Old Dhaka.
The very day a case was lodged with Sutrapur police in this connection.
The HC yesterday came up with the observation after reviewing the autopsy report prepared by Maksudur Rahman, a forensic doctor at Sir Salimullah Medical College, and the footage furnished by private television channel ATN News and the Detective Branch of Police.
The bench of Justice AHM Shamsuddin Choudhury Manik and Justice Mahmudul Hoque directed police to submit the charge sheet of the case to the lower court concerned as soon as possible for quick disposal of the case.
Deputy Attorney General (DAG) Amit Talukder told The Daily Star that he had already conveyed the order to the detective branch.
Meanwhile, forensic doctor Maksudur Rahman and investigation officer of the case Sub-Inspector (SI) Zahidul Haque of Sutrapur police yesterday appeared before the court to explain their reports to the HC bench as per earlier summons.
They told the court that they had prepared the report based on what they found during the autopsy and the inquest into the killing.
SI Zahidul informed the court that police had so far arrested seven accused in the case and were trying to arrest the rest. According to the deputy attorney general, nine persons had been made accused in the case.
At one stage of the hearing, Justice Manik pointed out that it was very unfortunate for the nation that a rickshaw puller had carried severely injured Bishwajit to the hospital while the police remained inactive.
On December 11, 2012, following a petition filed by a Supreme Court lawyer Eunus Ali Akond, the HC ordered immediate arrest of the killers and issued a rule upon the government to explain why it should not be directed to adequately compensate the bereaved family.
The HC bench yesterday adjourned the hearing on the rule for two months.
